Guest Post: Choosing the Right Centerpiece

One of the key aspects of party planning is décor. The first step: brainstorming. Once again, Pinterest is your savior. I often find the prettiest centerpieces under the wedding category. If all else fails, call my mother because she has a lovely sense of style.

The most important decoration is the table centerpiece. Choose this first, and then decorate the rest of the room around it. Beauty lies in simplicity. An ideal centerpiece is both elegant and simple. I have a mild obsession with flowers. Hydrangeas are my personal favorite. If done right, flower centerpieces look spectacular. Believe it or not, it is easy to go overboard. Make sure to stick to a limited color palette. I would not use more than two different flower colors. However, don’t be afraid to test out different combinations. Consider the theme of your event before choosing a centerpiece.

How formal is it? Who are you honoring? Take the season into account. A second opinion is always helpful.  Keep in mind; flowers are not your only option. Candles make for a beautiful display. Tea lights produce accent lighting and are perfect for a dimly lit atmosphere. Be sure not to choose strongly scented candles because that will be overwhelming. You can combine candles with flowers as well. Great candle holders include: lanterns, glass vases, floating candles in water, candlesticks, etc. I recently saw a candle centerpiece on an upside down wine glass, which was done quite tastefully.

Helpful Tips: Make sure the centerpiece doesn’t take up too much space or obstruct your guests’ views. Stick to your budget and coordinate with your venue.

Once you choose the right centerpiece, the rest will fall into place!
