It’s just another manic Monday
I wish it was Sunday
Cause that’s my fun day
I don’t have to run day
It’s just another manic Monday

The Bangles, 1985

The time change does weird things to my sense of time. Does it do that to y’all? I mean, you’d think that I would have been sleepy earlier last night, or that it would have been easier to get up this morning. Instead I lay awake until 1 AM thinking about all the things I had to do this week. It may have been slightly easier to get up this morning if my alarm hadn’t started going off an hour early, oh wait, no, that was my sweet, precious puppy whining to go out at 5:30 instead of 6:30. She is clearly totally oblivious to the time change. Sigh. Good thing she’s adorable and sweet as sugar.

I’ve got a lot going on these days…there’s work work…the job that pays me a salary to show up every day and create warning labels for tools. As I mentioned yesterday, The Olive Shoe “officially” (as in a public online presence in the form of theoliveshoe.com) turned two last month, and is steadily growing….if we’re talking timetables, it actually incubated in my brain and doodles for several years before that, but more on that later. I’m still getting the booth at Remnant’s situated and decorated and filled with goodies for shoppers. Van and I are involved in a WONDERFUL home group through our church that we are so blessed to be a part of. I recently joined the Junior League of Anderson. My book club is starting our 5th year with a knock out book line up…and that’s just a handful of the list. Fall is always a crazy time as a die hard Clemson fan – especially one that lives locally. Although I wouldn’t trade it for the world and game day Saturdays are fun, fabulous (even in the rain) and filled with memories…Once football season rolls around, you pretty much commit to losing 7 Saturdays of productivity, chores, and normal life. By this time in the fall it starts catch up with you….and we all know, that once Halloween is over, it’s practically Christmas!

I am a perfectionist. I am a type A, likes to be in control of my surroundings, needs to know what time it is, hates to be late (although it happens a lot), always has a berjillion items on my to-do list, strong-willed, hard working woman. The entrepreneurial spirit in me never, ever allows my brain to stop turning, especially when my creativity is going strong…even in my sleep…you can ask Van – I practically wrote a screen play in my sleep this weekend, just wish I could remember all of it!

The phrase “my to-do list” actually means many lists…one for today’s to-dos, one for the week’s to-dos, a list for Christmas cards (yep, this early), a list for Christmas gifts, one for things I need to do for The Olive Shoe, one for work work, one for cleaning our home, one for personal goals, a bucket list, a grocery list, I could go on, but you’re head is probably starting to spin…

I know that perfection as a human being is unattainable, but there are still those of us who get caught up in the plight and whirlwind of life and forget this little detail. I am one of these people. In several areas of my life, the fear of failure and failing to 1) recognize myself as imperfect  and 2) rely on my FAITH has wreaked havoc in my life in the past. However, several years ago, I realized that most of what goes on in the world is beyond my control. I decided that instead of focusing on PERFECTION, I would instead focus on PROGRESS.

A few weeks ago, I was having lunch with a friend and fellow blogger. We were discussing about the struggles of balancing what goes on #inreallife with keeping up a blog, publishing quality (over quantity) content, and she expressed her sometimes frustration with feeling the pressure of perfection. I told her about my decision to strive for progress over perfection, and she asked me when I was going to become a life coach. HA! Not this imperfect person!! Holy moly, I’d have some screwed up people out there wandering around. We had a good laugh.

A few weeks later the two of us were at another friend’s birthday party, and chatting as ladies do, the progress over perfection conversation came up with two other strong, smart, soulful women who struggle with the same frustrations…and I thought, there might be something to this. My idea of progress over perfection in no way means settling for sub-par, or just doing the bare minimum, or dare I say half-boohinying anything.

But seriously y’all, what if instead of comparing ourselves to others we may see as more perfect, or comparing ourselves to everything for that matter, or trying to pretend and convince the world that our lives are perfect (when we all know they aren’t), or flailing – and FAILING  miserably – at unattainable perfection that only the big guy upstairs can achieve…just what if…what if we focused on consistently and intentionally striving for progress with purpose instead of perfection. A slow, constant, steady movement forward for the entirety of our lives, one step at a time.

I have a little snippit of something I saw online once upon a time taped up at my desk that reads:

“Do one thing today that your future self will thank you for.” – Anonymous

So next time my Mom asks me how the heck I’m doing all this, that’s my answer…I’m doing one thing today that I don’t have to do tomorrow. One task. One project. One goal. One foot in front of the other. One day at a time.

Happy Monday y’all, and have a great week!
