Fall Flavors | Thyme | Time to Add Some Thyme To Your Cooking

Sooooo this never made it up last week…y’all will just get TWO flavors this week! Happy Thanksgiving week! Do you have some time to talk about thyme?

An herb from the mint family with many beneficial qualities, thyme has about 400 subspecies and has been around for quite some time. 😉 Haha pun intended. In all seriousness though, Medical News Today reports that thyme was used in Ancient Egypt for embalming, in Ancient Greece as an incense in temples and commonly added to bathwater, and also by the Romans, as a “cheese and alcoholic beverage flavoring”.

According to the doTERRA blog, Thyme was “given to knights and warriors before they went into battle by ladies of the Middle Ages. During this same period, Thyme was often placed beneath pillows to help promote a peaceful sleep and to ward off nightmares.” It is believed that the Romans are responsible for bringing thyme to the rest of Europe.

Medical News Today also suggests that thyme “may be more effective than acne prescription creams”. WOW! Thyme can also help lower blood pressure, help to relieve a cough and sore throat, get rid of pests, and help disinfect your home according to Healthline.com. Oncologists have also found evidence that thyme may be beneficial in protecting our bodies from colon and breast cancers. Health Impact News lists 20 health benefits of thyme oil citing experts and medical journals. Among these, in addition to some I’ve already listed, they report that thyme may be anti-spasmodic, anti-rheumatic, and antiseptic. Read the full list of benefits from Health Impact News here. This study even found that thyme essential oil beats ibuprofen for pain relief.
