Grinch-spiration | 15 Ideas to Seuss Up Your Holiday

To say that I love Dr. Seuss and The Grinch is an understatement. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVEEEE Dr. Seuss, and everything Seuss-ish. Dr. Seuss, Mary Engelbreit, and the Muppets have been huge influences in my life, art ‘style’ and creative thinking. The Grinch, along with Rudolph and Scrooge, has been a part of family holiday traditions since childhood, so much so that my entire family refers to roast beef as roast beast…it actually felt strange to type out “roast beef” instead of “roast beast” as the beast version of the phrase has replaced “beef” in my vocabulary. I can nearly recite the reading of The Grinch, and am such a fanatic that I watched the Making of The Grinch more than once (as in the Jim Carrey version full length film) when the movie was coming out however many years ago that was.

A few years ago when I was teaching K-3, we all decorated our classrooms with a different theme, and my co-teacher and I picked Whoville…here’s a glimpse into what that looked like:

So, in a nutshell, I’m a fan.

Dr. Seuss “Style” is very distinct:

  • Lots of bright colors in unusual and contrasting combinations
  • Heavy use of polka dots and stripes
  • Curved lines, curls and diagonals – few right angles or straight lines
  • Mis-match that is so mis-matched that it matches
  • Whimsy to the nth degree

This year, Van and I will be attending a Christmas character party, and as soon as I got the invitation I knew what character I would try to portray, a Who from Whoville. In looking for ideas, I got the idea for this post, so without further babbling and bumbling, here are some ideas and inspiration to Seuss-up your home for the holidays:
