Everyone Loves Manatees | Manatee Prints Using Potatoes

Living in Florida, we have the luxury of seeing manatees on a regular basis. These are super friendly creatures that people often swim with. They have many nicknames including the sea cow and sea potato. It was hearing the last term that made me come up with this manatee project for my preschool students. Honestly, it was surprising how well these prints turned out in addition to being a very easy and cost effective activity. Directions are listed below.

Materials:

  • Fingerling potatoes
  • Russet potato
  • Silver paint
  • Green paint
  • Small paint brush
  • Adhesive googly eyes

Steps:

  1. The first step is picking out the potatoes that look like the right parts of a manatee’s body. I cut them in half and pick one for each part – the body, head, flipper, and tail.
  2. Then, we dipped the potatoes in silver paint and stamped them on the construction paper.
  3. We then had the children paint some seaweed on the paper as well.
  4. Lastly, after the paint dried, we added the google eye and that was it!

That all there is to it! So easy for the children to complete and it looks so cute. Not to mention the minimal clean up – it is the perfect kid project for at home or at school. The children loved doing the project and we so proud to show their parents – I am sure your little one will love this project too.
