One thing all vino lovers have in common (aside the obvious and great taste!) is their collection of wine corks! What to do with them? There are many different cork displays on the market that are super cute, but these can fill quickly (faster for some than others… NO JUDGING!) Instead of buying another display or just throwing away your wine corks, BLASPHEMY, why not be crafty!

I have picked 5 of my top favorite wine cork crafts (Thank you, Pinterest) that I plan to do with my left over wine corks that I want to share with you. Rest assured, my crafts tend to be on the simpler side versus the more difficult (but very rewarding!) side.  And PLEASE, for goodness sake, save your wine corks (or give them to me)!

Be A Life Saver! Car Emergency Kit Musts | by Mae Mae

Being a planner, like all things, has its pros and cons. There is always a feeling of accomplishment when organizing and planning successfully. On the downside, I lack spontaneity and the thought of “what ifs” make me wheezy. I am also a successful procrastinator. I believe my success in being a procrastinator lies in planning down to the very last minute. Now that I think about it, I tend to be always running late. Hmm. Maybe, I am too good of a procrastinator. I just don’t see being punctual an attainable goal of mine. ANYWAY! My point, I like to plan which means I always like to be prepared. One way of being prepared is having an “emergency kit”. There are multiple situational emergency kit types, so for this post; I am going to go over car emergency kits. Woot Woot! I know you’re excited! 😀

Regardless of your situation, it’s HIGHLY recommended that you have an emergency bin in your vehicle. There are endless possibilities and situations that you could find yourself in but I feel this supply list covers many possibilities. First, make a list of your supplies, which will help you keep track of your inventory. Routinely go through your bin using your inventory list as a go by. You are now able to restock and replace perishable items successfully. Yay!

Emergency Car Kit Supplies

1. $20 Bill – Back up cash for gasoline, etc.
2. Battery Operated Weather Alert Radio – Store batteries separate to prevent corrosion.

3. Bin – Emergency kit supply storage, ideally to fit in your trunk.
4. Blanket – One fore each person traveling.
5. Escape Hammer – Keep this easily accessible to cut seatbelts and/or break windows.

6. Drinking Water
7. Duct Tape – A true multi-use tool! Make sure to have plenty of it.
8. Reflective Vest
9. Fire Extinguisher ABC – Class A: Paper, Trash and Wood Flammables Class B: Flammable or Combustibles Liquids (gasoline) Class C: Energized Electrical Equipment (batteries)
10. First Aid Kit – Include personal medication that is essential to you and/or family.
11. Flares
12. Flashlight – Include spare batteries.
13. Foam Tire Sealant – An easy and quick to fix a flat without changing the tire!
14. Gloves
15. Ice Scraper
16. Jumper Cables – Make sure they are at least 10 feet long.
17. Pocketknife and/or Multipurpose Utility Tool
18. Prepaid Phone- Have the minutes already placed on the phone and keep it charged.
19. Protein Bars – A non-perishable food source.
20. Hand Warmers
21. Rain Poncho
22. Rags
23. Red Cloth or Flag – Attention grabber!

24. Road atlas
25. Tire Pressure Gauge – Don’t forget to check the pressure in your spare tire!

air-pressure-reading

26. Thick Socks – Keep those toes warm! Also, can be used as gloves.
27. Walkie-Talkies w/ Batteries – Great for caravanning, especially in low cell service areas.
28. Warning Triangles / Cones

Additional items recommended for keeping in your vehicle

1. Antifreeze
2. Car Jack
3. Cat Litter – Place under your tires for traction.
4. Coins – Toll Roads
5. Empty Gas Can
6. Fuses
7. Motor oil
8. Portable Air Compressor
9. Snow Shovel – In the winter months of course!
10. Spare Tire
11. Tow Rope

You can buy car emergency kits (which is better than nothing), but they typically only cover the bare minimum. Don’t wait until it is too late to put your car emergency kit together! I hope these suggestions were helpful! Fingers crossed your kit stays only as a ‘piece of mind’ versus actually needed! My next “Be A Life Saver” post will discuss a SUBSTANTIAL Wedding Day emergency kit!

Storage Solutions | There’s Shower Rods and Curtain Rods and Tension Rods, Oh My! | By Mae Mae

Who doesn’t love an easy and cheap fix? If you can’t guess from the headline, this post will be consisting of different conventional and unconventional uses of shower, curtain and tension rods for storage AND decorative purposes! I will try to keep organization and decoration separate but you will see they often overlap!

Can I get some storage and organization, please?

Have limited space in your shower/tub? Use a shower rod with S hooks to hang loofas, baskets, or whatever your heart desires (and gets you squeaky clean)!

It happens to everyone! You’ve left a water trail behind as you frigidly run to grab a towel that you forgot. A simple fix is to hang a dual rod or a second rod outside of your shower curtain to hang your towels.

Creative Ways to Easily Update Your Home | Family Room | By Mae Mae

Decorating! I love it! It’s great way for people to really express themselves. The trick to decorating is not getting overwhelmed… not spending a crazy amount of money helps too! I am going to share some ideas that can transform a room in little time and money spent. The possibilities are endless which is why I have decided to make this a series. I believe all the following tips can be used in any room of your home but to start off this series, I am going to be focusing on your family/living room.

Before getting started on redecorating, DECLUTTER! It is time to look in the mirror and have a talk. Purge unneeded furniture and knickknacks! It may be that you can use your unneeded or unused furniture pieces in other parts of your home! A great book to read on this subject is The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo. A less cluttered room makes it feel larger and much more relaxing. Don’t forget, some home items are tax deductible when donated to organizations such as the Salvation Army. You may want to check what items are accepted by the organization that you choose.

Next, a new rug! If I plan to change a color scheme, I always find my rug first. Why? It is much easier to match something such as paint to a rug versus finding a rug to match a paint color! Yes, rugs can be expensive but I usually find a good deal at a rug outlet store. Now, a new rug is not always necessary to spruce your room up but if you are in the market for a new rug, I suggest finding your rug before updating anything else in your room. Rug size also matters. Ideally, a rug should be large enough to touch all seating furniture. This creates a pleasing focal point and cohesive look! It will also make the room feel larger. Also, try to match the shape of your rug to your other furniture in the room. For example, if you have an oval coffee table with a rounded couch, then buy a round rug.

choose_the_right_rug_infographic_blog

Accent your wall! I absolutely loath painting but LOVE the results! This is a great way to get the look without having to repaint the whole room. Here are a few suggestions to consider when deciding which wall to accent:

  • The wall behind your fireplace.
  • The wall behind a particular furniture piece.
  • The wall furthest in the room from entry point.

As discussed above, pick a color from your rug to help coordinate the room. A solid color wall can be perfect but you can also have some fun with this! There are plenty of DIY links that show how you can make your own stencil and paint designs on your wall. This will take more time but the results can be fabulous! Follow this link for DIY wall stencils.

Paint touch up. We are talking about your family room, which one would assume gets used frequently, right? Well, then one can also assume it shows, especially with your wall trimmings. One way to really make a room feel crisp and clean is to touch up these spots with paint. I promise it is worth the hassle!

Painting your wall or walls is only one option. You can also use wallpaper to accent a wall. Wallpaper comes in almost every design and color you can think of with multiple different textures. Wallpaper has a bad reputation but you can buy self adhesive wallpaper which can definitely make the process easier. I have seen people do amazing things with it!

54bbdce1e701a_-_hbz-wallpaper-stripes-04-lg

Wall decals, you either love them or you hate them! Wall decals tend to be less cumbersome than wallpaper and can be fairly low cost. Whether it’s a flashy design or a more conservative style, you can make a statement. Literally… you can buy custom decals and make a literal statement!

54bbdcd744447_-_hbz-wallpaper-graphic-01-lg

Lights. Updating and changing out your light fixtures can make a huge difference. It can be as simple as buying a new lampshade for your table lamp. If you feel like getting a little wild and crazy, change out your pendant and/or globe lights!

Update your window dressings. Of course matching your curtains to your color theme makes a tremendous difference but also how you hang your curtains can help too! A small trick that can make a huge difference is to hang your curtains closer to the ceiling versus at the top of the window. You can also hang you curtains 1 to 2 panels wider than the actual window, which makes it feel larger as well. Instead of curtains, you can do cornice boards. Cornice boards work great, especially for odd shaped windows. Look HERE for HOW-TO your own DIY cornice boards.

Don’t forget the little things! Updating minor items that may get over looked, such as accent pillows, can add the perfect touch when decorating your room! I am always on the look out when shopping! You never know when you will come across the “THE” accent throw or artwork piece that truly completes the room!

Using these tips can change your room completely! I am super excited to continue this series and give you tips for other parts of your home! If you do feel overwhelmed, just take it one step at a time. My hope is that you feel creative and have fun when doing it! You got this! Happy decorating!
